10 Music “Hootenanny” Performances

3 December 2010

10 Music classes decided to end the year with a good old-fashioned hootenanny– which was rather brave because none of us, even Mr. Burcin, knew exactly what that meant. We just thought it was a fun word.

But we persevered, chose music that had some kind of a folksy/ country/ rock feel and got stuck into rehearsals.

There was some talk of dressing up, bringing along some food, and there was a request for a pony– yeah right! I guess the motto is, “be careful what you wish for.”

Have a listen (and download) the recordings here . . . >

15 August 2010

Congratulations to students in Waimea College’s Jazz Ensemble – “The Big Mac Combo” who were awarded a Silver Award from Christchurch’s annual school’s Jazz competition, JazzQuest, held on 23 – 25 July. Initially held by CPIT in 2006, JazzQuest is a competition for secondary school big bands and ensembles, and aims to showcase the performance of school bands and musicians. A record 25 bands competed in this year’s competition from afar field as Auckland. The Big Mac Combo (pictured – Lauren Ford,  Marcelle Hecker, Michelle Hecker, Nathan Irvine, Laurence Watts, Partick West, Matt Lattin and tutor Jane Fisher) also met with professional jazz singer Susan de Jong who held a workshop with the group to teach them a few more jazz performance tricks in the lead up to their competition set. Can you write a theme tune?

2 August 2010

What Now is the iconic New Zealand kids TV show, with a large and loyal family audience and a 28 year history of early morning madness packed full of mess and laughs. With a core audience target of 5-12 year olds What Now broadcasts live every Sunday morning on TV2. In 2010 What Now are seeking a new theme song to accompany new opening titles and to be used in a variety of re-mixed edits as break stings and music beds under graphics and studio content. The theme song would need to be upbeat and fast with a thirty second duration. This core track will need to have the ability to be extended as a musical backing track of two minutes, as well as cut down into short 3 and 5 second stings. What Now has three presenters, Charlie and Serena who are based in the studio environment, and Tumehe (or Tu) who travels out and about around the small towns with Slam! There is also a gorilla ‘Camilla’ and a mail sorting robot ‘Red’. The look for What Now is bright and early morning, with an upbeat feel – and in 2010 we are ‘having a laugh’ so all elements of the show need a fresh and cheeky tweak. Lyrics should include the name of the show, and where possible feature presenters names, this can be in the first person as they will be singing. This should be a song that kids think is cool and want to sing at school – an anthem for fun in the morning. If you are interested in submitting a track we would need the lyrics and a copy of the song arrangement and someone singing the lyrics on it on CD or sent digitally. Expressions of interest are required by Monday the 11th of January 2010, with final submissions due on the 18th of January 2010 via email to reuben@whitebait-tv.com or posted to Whitebait TV, Attn: Reuben Davidson, PO BOX 2489, Christchurch. The successful song will receive $1500 on the delivery of backing and lyric sheet. Any further questions please call Reuben Davidson on 0272-555-899 www.whitebait-tv.com

The Big Sing 2010

1 June 2010

On Monday 14 June, Belle a Cappella & Camerata choirs will be heading off to the Big Sing regional heats in Blenheim to compete for a place in the National Finale in Auckland in August. Both choirs are already rehearsing very hard in preparation for this event, working on pieces to satisfy the three categories for the competition. Each choir must present a pre-1930s piece, one from the NZ/Pacific region and a third of their own choice. Our concert on Wednesday 26 May at the Cathedral showcased the hard work of these choirs as well as being the final opportunity to perform in public before the heats. Visit www.belleacappella.org to follow their progress.

Click HERE for more information about the Big Sing Regionals and to order tickets for the Gala Concert.

Parents & friends can attend the afternoon competition sessions for $5.

Please be reminded that if you intending to go to Blenheim to watch and then intend to bring your student home, you must inform Mrs Sullivan in writing immiediately.

Belle a Cappella – Little Big Sing Primary Schools Tour

1 June 2010

While attending the Big Sing Finale in Palmerston North in 2005 as audience members, Belle a Cappella toured local primary schools. Since then, director Chris Burcin has often talked about how wonderful it would be to do such a thing in Nelson. So in preparation for their Big Sing performances on Monday 14 June, Belle a Cappella are taking their music on tour to primary schools in the area to share the joys of choral music with younger members of our community. The choir will perform at four local primary schools on Friday 11 June.

Misguided Monster lead guitarist, Sam Kennedy, said that he was really impressed by the improvement in the standard of the entrants this year. DAUGHTERS OF HEAVEN

1 June 2010

On Monday 17 & 18 May, Year 13 Drama students presented Daughters of Heaven by Michelanne Forster at The Boathouse in Nelson. Two casts performed over two nights to full capacity audiences. The gripping true story of the 1954 Parker/Hulme murder case in Christchurch was brought to life by some amazingly mature characterisations by our outstandingly talented young actors. The interactive staging demanded the audience’s attention be alternately drawn to action within each household, cunningly interjected by quirky asides from the maid (Katherine Bruce/Zoey Tomlinson) and official summaries from the Crown Prosecutor (Michael Allsopp). Congratulations to the cast & crew for another brilliant Waimea College public performance.

Shakespeare Nationals

1 June 2010

The two Waimea College groups selected from the regional festival to go on to the Sheilah Winn Otago University National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington at Queen’s Birthday weekend are rehearsing hard for the fast-approaching intense high-level competition. The compilation of scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Mel Stewart, will perform in the 15-minute category (cast = Michael Allsopp, Scott Sumby, Matt Lattin, Tom Rackley, Hamish Jonkers, Zac O’Donoghue, Ashton Wastney, Gabriel Bowen, Lauren Hammond, Emma Hart, Pippy Shelling, Katrina Tutton, Helena Savage, Lauren Lines, Gayle Hay) and another scene from the same play, directed by student, Gayle Hay, will perform in the 5-minute category (Gayle Hay & Nathanael Wilson). We wish them luck at the National Festival where they will not only have the opportunity to compete, but also to see entries from the other schools and participate in several theatre workshops led by professionals in the field.
