Join us at the NELSON SCHOOL OF MUSIC – This Friday!
12 August 2009
Following on from their success in the “Solitary” concerts in June, Year 11, 12 and 13 Music students are presenting two more concerts in September in order to complete their performance requirements for NCEA Music. Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive from the June concerts—the venues were great and the students clearly enjoyed performing in such great spaces. As last time, many students will be performing as featured soloists, but the “Suspended” concerts will see a lot more performances by students as a member of a group. These concerts are open to the public, so be sure to book your tickets early and then encourage your friends and neighbours to come along and support this new initiative from the Music Department! As last time, the students are being given a choice of venues depending on the style of music they are planning to present:
Suspended ReVolution 1 Sept, 7pm – The Playhouse, Mapua, for rock, jazz and generally amplified styles
Suspended ReSolution 11 Sept, 7pm-The Nelson School of Music (NSOM) for classical, folk and more acoustic styles.

University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival 2009
13 March 2009

Rehearsals are going well for our 15 entries to the UOSWSF. Categories consist of fifteen minute adult, or student-directed scenes, and five-minute student-directed excerpts. But of course, students can interpret the Shakespeare text in any way they choose. The rules simply state that the original text must be used. Last year our puppet show version of the famous Romeo & Juliet balcony scene, brought home two awards for Waimea along with the countless others! Come along this year to Motueka High School on Saturday 4 April to support our student entries.

Audition on YouTube to play Carnegie Hall
10 December 2008
. . . Boiled down, it has two essential parts. The composer Tan Dun has written a four-minute piece for orchestra. YouTube users are invited to download the individual parts for their instruments from the score, record themselves performing the music, then upload their renditions. . .
. . . Entrants have until Jan. 28 to upload their videos. The panel picks a short list of finalists, and YouTube users, “American Idol”-style, choose the winners, who are flown to Carnegie Hall in April for a concert conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, the music director of the San Francisco Symphony. Google will arrange for visas and pay costs. . . . Read the full article . . . >
