Waimea College’s renowned jazz band is heading off, once again, to participate in the Southern Jam, the Top of the South Youth Jazz Festival.
In the past the group has represented the college superbly, winning Silver and Bronze awards, as well as several special awards—including most unusual instrument (megaphone).
This year’s group consists of 4 wildly talented Waimea College students: Lucy Carver (saxophone), Ben Wilkinson (guitar), Marcus Irvine (drums) and Laura Marwick (vocals) plus one student from Nayland (who must be talented to keep up with these guys). They are led by their truly inspiring teacher, Tim Parker. The group does not currently have a name—in the past it has survived under various guises including the Defect Society (then as rock band), The Parker Experience (where they played the Nelson Jazz Festival) and even Funy Dorey. If you manage to get over to the Southern Jam, look for them as the “Nayland/ Waimea Combo”.
For Southern Jam 2008 the event will include approximately 200 students – some from as far away as Queenstown and Dunedin. The the New Zealand Air Force Band will once again take the Master class sessions and judge the competition as well as performing at the Gala concert. This offers the students a fantastic opportunity to learn from such a well respected professional band and in addition to the community as a whole who also benefited from the chance to see the New Zealand Air Force Band in action.
In addition to the workshops, the schools will take part in public performances at key venues around Blenheim and Picton, giving them the chance to put into practice what they learn at the workshops. This also offers the community the chance to hear some very talented youth performances free of charge. Look for them at cafes and wineries around Marlborough, and even at the airforce base.
For more information, including specific performance venues where you can here the combo free of charge, visit the Southern Jam events page.

We have revised the schedule– it should answer all of your questions now, whether you are a cast member, dancer, Orchestra member, band member, Camerata member or Jesus Himself!
Please study it– there will be new copies available in M block from Wednesday 18 June.

Congratulations to Belle a Cappella– the list has just been announced and Bella has been chosen, out of more than 200 choirs nationwide, to compete once again in the Big Sing National Finale!

The Finale takes place in Wellington from 21-24 August. Each choir will perform a lunchtime recital somewhere in the Wellington CBD, present 2 ten-minute recitals for adjudication and present one item at the Gala Concert.
